Our Rich History
Foundation
The San Antonio Philatelic Association was founded by a group of 12 dedicated stamp collectors who began meeting regularly to trade stamps and share knowledge.
Growth & Expansion
Membership grew to over 50 collectors from throughout South Texas. The club began publishing its first newsletter, originally called "The Collector's Monthly."
Golden Anniversary
SAPA celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special exhibition and banquet. The club received recognition from the American Philatelic Society for its longevity and contributions to the hobby.
First Annual Exhibition
The club organized its first formal annual exhibition, which later became known as SAPA EXPO, showcasing members' collections and attracting visitors from across the state.
PHILATEX Launch
The club's newsletter was revamped and renamed "PHILATEX," which continues to be published quarterly and has won several awards for philatelic journalism.
Centennial Celebration
SAPA celebrated 100 years with a special exhibition featuring rare stamps from members' collections and a commemorative postal cancellation issued by the USPS.
Digital Transformation
The club embraced technology with the launch of its website, digital newsletter options, and virtual meeting capabilities to complement in-person gatherings.
125th Anniversary
Despite pandemic challenges, SAPA marked its 125th year with virtual events and a special edition of PHILATEX chronicling the club's remarkable journey through American history.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, SAPA continues to thrive with a diverse membership of collectors from all backgrounds, maintaining the same passion for philately that inspired its founding in 1896.
"The longevity of the San Antonio Philatelic Association is a testament to the enduring appeal of stamp collecting and the strong community of collectors in our region."
